C. S. Lewis talks about planting wheat in his book Mere Christianity. Obviously, he says, if you want to produce wheat, it must go deeper than the surface. The ground must be plowed and seed needs to be sown. This applies to our lives: that which we have received from the Spirit but kept on the surface of our lives must be replanted deep within our beings. Only God can do that but we must allow him access to the depths of our beings. The journey to the depths of God requires that God have access to the depths of our hearts. We must open our hearts fully and give complete access to the Holy Spirit. Doing so allows the Spirit to work throughout our whole being and restore and renew and reconstruct our inner life to bring out new results—fruit that fits our profound relationship with God.
